NHL Trade
Dynamic goal scorer Vladimir Tarasenko has told the St. Louis Blues that he would like to be traded. It could happen in the next few weeks

Advanced analytics are as much a part of the NHL these days as sticks, pucks and visors. Every team uses the study of advanced data in some manner.

That’s why  San Jose Hockey Now’s data-driven story about the star potential of draft prospects caught my attention. Writer Sheng Peng reports a data scientist has concluded Swedish left William Eklund has the highest star potential among the draft candidates. Eklund’s star potential is five times the star potential owned by University of Michigan defenseman Owen Power. Power is expected to be drafted No. 1 overall.

According to data scientist Patrick Bacon’s projections, here are the top five in terms of likelihood for stardom:

  1. William Eklund 71.25 %
  2. Cole Sillinger 62.52 %
  3. Dylan Guenther 50.04 %
  4. Matthew Coronato 45.48 %
  5. Brandt Clarke 38.58 %

Trade Rumor of the Day

Athletic sportswriter Jeremy Rutherford reported Wednesday that St. Louis Blues star Vladimir Tarasenko wants out of St. Louis. Rutherford said Tarasenko is unhappy about how the team treated his injuries.

Tarasenko has a no-trade clause, allowing him to control where he goes. The best guess is he would accept trades to the New York Islanders, New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers. Russian players historically appreciate the large Russian population in New York. And who wouldn’t want a chance to play with Connor McDavid? Would bet he would also accept the Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins.
