The Daily: Detroit Prospect Chase Pearson Serves 1-game Suspension

Chase Pearson, Detroit Red Wings

Detroit Red Wings prospect Chase Pearson served his one-game suspension last night while his Grand Rapids Griffins were losing a 2-1 overtime decision to the Chicago Wolves.

Pearson was suspended by the AHL for a butt-ending incident in a game against Manitoba.

If the Red Wings end up with another injury at forward, Pearson could be the next call-up. He has been a consistently effective player for the Griffins. He has nine points in 11 games this season, giving him 31 points his past 39 games with the Griffins. Pearson is 6-3 and can play on a scoring or checking line.

The Griffins’ next game is Friday at the Texas Stars.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman says the  Montreal Canadiens are scouring the trade market for a defenseman. Meanwhile, the Athletic discusses the possibility of the Edmonton Oilers’ pursuing Marc-Andre Fleury.. Here are more plausible suggestions and options.

Around the NHL

Detroit: The improving Red Wings still need a helping hard. Here are six ways to improve the Red Wings

Calgary: Steve Macfarlane writes about Jarome Iginla’s Hall of Fame Induction

New York: The Islanders are in last place in the Metropolitan Division. Adding to their misery: they lost defenseman Ryan Pulock for 4-6 weeks. Here are replacement options.

There was some crazy trade speculation that the Islanders would go after Mark Giordano, John Klingberg, etc. However, that seems like wishful thinking.

Pittsburgh: Evgeni Malkin is progressing in his rehab from knee surgery. The Penguins are starting to discuss his return.

Also, Pittsburgh Hockey Now discusses the team’s three biggest roster needs.

Toronto: The Maple Leafs are a different team since the Penguins walloped them 7-1. Goalie Jack Campbell is on fire, and so is Auston Matthews

Washington: Tom Wilson playing for Canada in the Olympics? It’s possible.

Boston: There’s been quite a reaction in Boston to Fenway buying the Penguins. It’s ranged from anger to silly.  There’s even talk in Boston about  Bruins could get Sidney Crosby
