The Daily: Red Wings Draftees Help Griffins Stay Alive in AHL Playoff Hunt

Victor Brattstrom, Grand Rapids Griffins
Victor Brattstrom, a Red Wings' 2018 sixth-round draft, made 30 saves to help the Grand Rapids Griffins earn a crucial 3-1 win against the Iowa Wild.

Jonatan Berggren is proving he deserves to be in Detroit by continuing to be vital to the Grand Rapids Griffins’  hopes of qualifying for the American Hockey League playoffs.

Berggren produced the game-winning goal and an assist and fellow Red Wings draftee Victor Brattstrom made 30 saves to spark the Griffins to a crucial 3-1 win against the Iowa Wild. The Griffins (31-31-6) now have a .500 points percentage. Because the AHL has an unbalanced schedule this season, points percentage determines the standings. The Wild, at .508, hold the final playoff spot in the AHL’s Central Division.

Berggren has been one of the Griffins’ hottest players. The Swedish standout has three goals and five assists for eight points in his past five games. He has 54 points in 64 games for the Griffins this season. The Red Wings are pleased with his development.  Berggren’s goal against Iowa was his seventh game-winner of the season.

The expectation is he will be on the Red Wings’ roster next season.
