The Daily: Team Sweden Lops Soderblom From Its Roster
Team Sweden’s decision to cut Detroit Red Wings prospect Elmer Soderblom from its roster at the World Championships is a reminder that he is still a young unproven player.
Soderblom, goalie Oskar Dansk and defenseman Christian Folin were dropped when Boston goalie Linus Ullmark, Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson and Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander accepted invitations to play for Sweden.
The 6-foot-8 Soderblom got everyone’s attention this season by scoring 21 goals in 52 games for Frolunda in the Swedish Hockey League. He boasts hands and skating skill. The Red Wings plan is to bring him to training camp this fall. Based on social media comments, Detroit fans are rightfully excited.
However, Soderblom is only 20 and unpolished by NHL standards. He may need time in Grand Rapids or elsewhere before he is ready to help the Red Wings. He will have a shot at making the Red Wings, but it is far from a given.
