The hockey operations staff of the Vancouver Canucks recently underwent a revamping. Among the changes implemented was giving the Sedin twins Daniel and Henrik a greater role. Also, there was the addition of former Detroit Red Wings forward Mikael Samuelsson in a player development position.

Samuelsson and Niklas Kronwall, currently serving as advisor to Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, were teammates on Detroit’s 2007-08 Stanley Cup championship squad. Interestingly, it’s appearing as though Samuelsson will be taking on a role in the Vancouver organization similar to what Kronwall does for the Wings.

Speaking to Swedish writer Gunnar Nordstrom of Expressen.se, Daniel Sedin was outlining why they brought Samuelsson into the fold, as well as defining the position he will be filling.

“We know Micke well,” Daniel Sedin explained. “He stands for things we like and advocate, namely hard work and structure.”

Like Kronwall, Samuelsson is to be based in Sweden and will be working closely with Vancouver’s European-based draft picks.
