Detroit Red Wings
The Daily: Red Wings Doing Goalie Makeover; Bruce Cassidy Off Board

The Detroit Red Wings are not done signing goaltenders. GM Steve Yzerman began changing up his goaltending by reaching a deal with the World Championship MVP Jussi Olkinuora
Olkinuora, on a two-year contract, presumably will be given a chance to compete for a spot on the Red Wings’ roster. If that doesn’t happen, he would be paid $375,000 to play for Grand Rapids. Yzerman will likely sign another veteran pro goalie to add to the mix.
Thomas Greiss and Calvin Pickard are both unrestricted free agents.
Sebastian Cossa, a Red Wings 2021 first-round pick, should be headed for Grand Rapids next season. But Yzerman said he won’t make any final decision about Cossa until after his season is finished. Cossa is playing in the Memorial Cup for the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Red Wings also must decide what to do with prospect Victor Brattstrom who played for the Griffins last season.
Finnish-born Olkinuora played in North America from 2010 to 2016. He played for Sioux Falls in the United States Hockey League, then the University of Denver and then the St. John’s IceCaps, Ontario Reign, Tulsa Oilers and Manitoba Moose. He played in the Kontinental Hockey League before helping Finland win the World Championship.
Video proves he plays aggressively.
