The piece is the brainchild of Birmingham, Michigan-based visual artist Troy Murray, better known as TYP. The Fedorov work is the latest Red Wings contribution of this talented fellow. Murray also happens to be an avid fan of the club.
The TYP Collection also includes artwork of current Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin. As well, there’s works of former Detroit captain and current Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, and Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Chelios.
Murray ended up auctioning off the Larkin painting in 2019, raising funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. The captain even signed it to make the artwork into a more treasured one-of-a-kind collectible.
“That’s amazing,” Dylan Larkin told Murray upon originally seeing the finished product. “First person to ever make me look good.”
If you want to get up close and personal with the TYP collection, you can visit his Birmigham studio. Or you can check out two of his works that are on display at Little Caesars Arena. Murray created a 50×30 foot installation of Chelios and Detroit Pistons defensive dynamo Ben Wallace that adorn the walls of the home to both teams.
Creations Of His Red Wings Heroes
Murray puts a lot of hockey into his hockey art. The creation of the Fedorov piece utilizes skates as a medium. Both the Larkin and Chelios art work consist entirely of pucks.
“The Chris Chelios one, we used the amount of pucks that he played games in the NHL,” Murray explains in a video on his website typcollection.com. “Sixteen hundred and 51 pucks. And then 24 of those pucks are painted silver to represent his record of the most playoff seasons all-time of any player.
“All these players were my idols growing up. So to be able to have something where kids coming to the arena to see these new players can appreciate this, it’s a dream come true. I can’t believe it’s actually happening.
“It was already amazing coming here to see games. It makes it that much more special every time I come.”
