The Red Wings are offering better Stanley Cup odds than 10 other NHL teams.

The offseason moves of the Detroit Red Wings to add eight new players, including David Perron and Ville Husso would appear to be pushing the club to a place where they can legitimately compete for a place in the Stanley Cup playoffs. And that would also appear to be the way that online betting sites are viewing the situation.

True, the Red Wings are still long shots to win the Stanley Cup. However, those odds are much shorter than they were leading into the 2021-22 NHL season.

A year ago, the Red Wings were showing +15000, or 150-1 odds to capture the Cup. Only the Buffalo Sabres (+20000) were being given longer odds.

This season, Caesars Sportsbook is listing Detroit at a betting line of +5000, or 50-1. That puts them as the co-18th best favorite. Not exactly a Cup contender. However, since 16 teams qualify for the playoffs, it indicates that the Wings are in with a strong chance at postseason participation.

Playoffs Still Unlikely For Red Wings

BetMGM is setting Detroit’s 2022-23 season point total at 84.5 points. Based on last season, the Red Wings will need to be significantly over that number to get into the postseason. During the 2021-22 NHL campaign, all eight Eastern Conference playoff teams garnered at least 100 points. Play the over or the under on this wager and the odds offered are -115,

At BetMGM, they are also listing the Red Wings with a better chance of winning the Eastern Conference (25-1) than of winning the Atlantic Division (28-1). Detroit is also 66-1 to win the President’s Trophy.

A year ago, the Red Wings were -5000 odds to miss the Stanley Cup playoffs. At those odds, it meant that they were given an implied probability of missing the playoffs of 98%. A bettor would need to wager $5000 in order to realize a profit of $100 at that betting line. On the other hand, the Red Wings were +2000 to make the playoffs.

As the 2022-23 season nears, the odds of the Red Wings to make the playoffs have shortened significantly. DraftKings is listing Detroit as +290 to make it to postseason play. They’re given a better chance to qualify than nine other teams. The Wings are -380 to miss the playoffs.

In the big picture, Detroit’s chances of qualifying for the postseason are still not good. But as The Beatles once suggested, it’s getting better all the time.
