The Daily: Ex-Red Wings Helm Ailing in Avalanche Camp; Bertuzzi back soon for Detroit
Helm out for Avalanche; Bertuzzi back soon for Red Wings
Injuries were often part of the narrative during Darren Helm’s days with the Detroit Red Wings.
Things haven’t changed since Helm changed locales to the Colorado Avalanche last season. As the Avalanche opened training camp, Helm was unable to be a participant.

He was playing with an abdominal tear as Colorado was marching to the Stanley Cup. Helm is skating on his own at Avalanche camp, still recovering from the injury. The Avalanche signed Helm to a one-year, $1.25-million contract in the offseason. He’s the only active NHL player who is a Stanley Cup winner with the Red Wings.
The reigning Stanley Cup champion Avalanche are discovering the price a team pays for Cup glory. Captain Gabriel Landeskog (knee) isn’t expecting to be ready for the start of the season. Mikko Rantanen was given a maintainance day on Saturday. That’s a rarity during training camp.
