Soderblom, Veleno Make Cut as Red Wings Set 23-Player Roster
Red Wings going with seven defenseman and 14 forwards to start NHL season
As far as the Detroit Red Wings are concerned, Elmer Soderblom is in. Ditto for Joe Veleno.
Givani Smith, though, is on the outs.
The Red Wings weren’t wasting time in setting their 23-player roster for the 2022-23 NHL regular season. The NHL was giving the Detroit braintrust until 5 pm ET on Monday to be getting down to 23. However, completion of the decision-making was done long before the arrival of the witching hour.
Forward Elmer Soderblom was the only rookie to survive to the final cut. On Sunday, Detroit was handing efenseman Simon Edvinsson, the club’s top pick in the 2021 NHL entry draft, assignment to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.
What a shot from Joe Veleno

Also making the grade was second-year center Joe Veleno. Even though he saw duty in 66 NHL games last season, there was still a sense that Veleno was vunerable to demotion. He was the only NHL-experienced forward who the team could still be sending down to the minor leagues without first passing through NHL waivers.
Detroit Assigns Smith To Grand Rapids
Detroit began Monday with 32 players still in camp. After clearing NHL waivers at 12pm ET on Monday, veteran forward Smith was going on his way to Detroit’s top farm club, the AHL Griffins.
Three other players who also were clearing NHL waivers on Monday were shipping out. Goalie Juho “Jussi” Okinuora and forwards Taro Hirose and Kyle Criscuolo were also getting an assignment to GR.

The Red Wings were placing forward Robby Fabbri on injured reserve. He’s still recovering from offseason knee surgery. Defensemen Jake Walman (shoulder), Mark Pysyk (Achilles) and Seth Barton (undisclosed) were all being situated on the non-roster injury list.
Finally, the team was issuing defenseman Jeremie Biakabutuka his release from an amateur tryout. The nephew of former Michigan and NFL running back Tim Biakabutuka has a standing contract offer from the AHL Chicago Wolves.
