Red Wings picks Buium, Savage selected to USA world junior roster

There are two future Detroit Red Wings and two others with connections to the organization populating the roster that will be representing USA Hockey at the upcoming world junior championship.

Two players selected by Detroit in the 2021 NHL entry draft are part of the the 32-player USA roster. Miami (Ohio) forward Red Savage, selected 114th overall in last year’s draft, played for the USA in last season’s tournament. Denver defenseman Shai Buium, chosen 36th overall in 2021, will be seeking to make the team for the first time.

There are other Red Wings connections with the USA Hockey squad. Saginaw Spirit (OHL) goaltender Andrew Oke was with the Red Wings at both their summer development camp and fall NHL rookie tournament. Assistant coach Pat Ferschweiler of the Western Michigan Broncos was a Red Wings assistant coach from 2015-19.

Red Wings Next Game

The third game in Detroit’s four-game road trip is Thursday night at Florida against the Panthers. On the road, the Red Wings have lost five straight and eight of nine games to the Panthers. Detroit’s last win at Florida was a 4-1 verdict on February 7, 2021.

Griffins Gone Wild

It was a big night for a number of Grand Rapids Griffins during a 6-2 win over the Iowa Wild on Wednesday.

Pontus Andreasson continued his hot streak by scoring the second goal of the night. The rookie now has 14 points in his last 13 games (7-7-14) and is third on the team in total points (7-8-15). Taro Hirose added three helpers to his team-leading assist total. Joel L’Esperance and Steven Kampfer each chipped in two goals.

Defenseman Albert Johansson rgistered his first AHL goal, with Magnus Hellberg posting his first win with the Griffins. Lukas Craggs, Alex Chiasson and Gordie Green all made their Griffins debut. Craggs tallied an assist, while former NHLer Chiasson notched two assists.

Florida: According to a published report out of Finland, Panthers captain Sasha Barkov is suffering from pneumonia. Florida Panthers

Montreal: There’s still an internal debate whether to keep Juraj Slafkovsky with Montreal or send him to the world juniors. Montreal Canadiens

Calgary: As Jacob Markstrom’s struggles continue, Dan Vladar will be getting the nod in goal. Calgary Flames
