The Daily: Ovechkin Nears Red Wings Howe; Might He Emulate Mr. Hockey?

Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

In a prop bet offering at online sportsbook FanDuel, the Detroit Red Wings were the second betting choice to surrender Alex Ovechkin’s 800th NHL goal. Instead, it was an ex-Red Wings netminder, Petr Mrazek, who was victimized for a hat-trick on Wednesday that enabled the Washington Capitals captain to become the third NHL player to net 800 regular-season goals.

The Ottawa Senators were the +270 chalk to be Ovechkin’s 800th victim. The Red Wings were next at a betting line of +420. Savvy bettors who went with Chicago to allow Ovi’s 800th goal were cashing in at odds of +3100.

Earlier this season, Ovechkin netted NHL goal No. 786 against the Red Wings. That tied him with Red Wings icon Gordie Howe for the most NHL goals scored with one team. Howe finished his NHL career with 801 regular-season goals – 786 for the Wings and 15 with the Hartford Whalers.

Howe’s 801st and final regular-season tally came against the Red Wings and goalie Rogie Vachon onApril 6, 1980. It was the only goal he ever scored against Detroit.

Might Ovechkin also pot No. 801 against the Wings? The Capitals play host to Detroit on Monday. but first they have games against the Dallas Stars (Thursday) and Toronto Maple Leafs (Saturday).

Griffins Reassign Warrod

The AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, AHL farm club of the Wings, are assigning forward Drew Worrad to the ECHL Toledo Walleye.

Worrad has appeared in 21 games this season with the Griffins, totaling six penalty minutes and a minus-10 rating.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • Detroit will be playing the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday without captain Dylan Larkin
  • A power-play goal was the difference as the Wings were 1-0 losers to the Carolina Hurricanes
  • Veteran NHL defenseman Steven Kampfer was recalled from AHL Grand Rapids
  • Red Wings forward Robby Fabbri (knee) is on pace for a January return to action

Red Wings Next Game

Detroit will look to improve to 4-0 this season in the second game of back to backs on Wednesday in Minnesota against the Wild. The Wings have lost two in a row and five of six at Minnesota.
