The Daily: Bruins Eye Kane, Not Toews; USA Cuts Red Wings’ Prospect

Patrick Kane, chicago Blackhawks
The Boston Bruins are interested in Patrick Kane, not Jonathan Toews. But they've only had preliminary talks with Blackhawks.

Detroit Red Wings 2021 second-round draft pick Shai Buium did not make USA’s final roster for the upcoming World Junior Championships. The tournament will be played in Canada in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Moncton, New Brunswick from Dec. 26 until Jan. 5

Forward Red Savage, son of former NHL player Brian Savage, is the only Red Wings draft pick on the roster. Savage,  a sophomore forward at Miami, was a Red Wings’ fourth-round pick (114th overall) in 2021. He has 10 points in 16 games for Miami this season.

Buium, a defenseman at the University of Denver, was on USA’s preliminary roster earlier this month. The smooth-skating defender is a Red Wings’ second-round pick (2021). He has eight points in 16 games and is +6. He’s +26 in his college career.

Competition for spots was intense. USA’s 32-person preliminary roster boasted 24 NHL draft picks, including seven first-round picks and seven second round selections.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

The Red Wings seem to be almost jinxed when it comes to No. 2 goalies. Bob Duff explains.

Defenseman Olli Maatta explained that it was pneumonia that has kept him out of the lineup for the last four games.

Forward Jakub Vrana is fired up and eager to play for the Red Wings again after a two-month absence. The Red Wings are thankful to have him back on the roster.

 Red Wings’ Next Game

The Red Wings (13-10-6) are home against the Ottawa Senators (13-14-2). Filip Hronek participated fully in practice Friday and should play. Captain Dylan Larkin (injured hand) Defenseman Olli Maatta (recovering from pneumonia) will be a game time decision. Coach Derek Lalonde said Maatta was laboring in practice.
