The Daily: Pietrangelo Has Family Scare; Red Wings Want to Blank Ovi Tonight

Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

The Detroit Red Wings respect Alex Ovechkin’s accomplishments. They are clear about that. But coach Derek Lalonde is also said that the team doesn’t want to allow Ovechkin to pass legendary Gordie Howe when he’s playing the Red Wings tonight.

Howe played 25 years for the Red Wings. In addition to moving past Howe, Ovechkin is now only 94 behind Wayne Gretzky for the all-time record.

“It’s pretty special to see it happen,” Detroit’s David Perron said. “I think anybody, when he started in ’05 or ’06, whenever he started, he changed his style of play a little bit from then, he was running around a lot more back then, being more physical. He still does at times. Trust me, in playoffs, I’ve been on the other side of a couple hits and it’s not easy. ”

“But he’s also found a way to be consistent, scoring his goals on the power play, obviously, but he does it in different ways, too. It’s pretty amazing what he’s doing. In a way I think we’re all kind of cheering for him a little bit as far as down the road if he can beat that record it would be a cool thing for the league. Certainly a record that 10 years ago no one saw that it could ever be broken.”

But the Red Wings don’t want to move past Howe tonight.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

The Red Wings don’t want Alex Ovechkin pass Gordie Howe on their watch. Ovechkin needs one goal tonight to move past Howe into second place on the NHL’s all-time goal list.

What’s on the Red Wings’ Christmas list: ending the chaos on the penalty kill.

What’s up with the Red Wings’ No. 2 goalie history? It never seems to work out.

 Red Wings’ Next Game

The Red Wings (13-10-6) are home against the Washington Capitals  (13-14-2). This is a critical game for the Red Wings who have lost five in a row (4-0-1). They can’t allow the season to spiral out of control. Meanwhile, the Capitals have won six of their last seven games to climb back into the Metropolitan Division race.
