Austin Czarnik was sent back to the Grand Rapids Griffins

The Grand Rapids Griffins received an early Christmas present when the Detroit Red Wings were finally healthy enough to return Austin Czarnik to the AHL team.

The Griffins also announced that Red Wings first-round pick Sebastian Cossa would come up from the Toledo Walleye. Earlier this week, the Red Wings acquired Danny O’Regan from the Anaheim Ducks.

All three players will be available when the Griffins play a road game against the Chicago Wolves on Thursday and a home game against Cleveland on Friday.

Both Czarnik and O’Regan could give the Griffins an offensive boost. Czarnik posted six goals and 14 points in 12 games with Grand Rapids this season. Former Boston University player O’Regan had 18 points in 27 games for the San Diego Gulls before the trade.

The Griffins’ 10-14-1 record puts them second-to-last in the AHL’s Central Division.  The Griffins are scoring an average of 2.88 goals per game and giving up 4.0 goals per game. Given how many prospects are on the Griffins, it’s important that they are highly competitive.

Trade Rumor Mill

Lots of trade chatter floating around even though we are in the holiday period where deals cannot be made. Philadelphia forward James van Riemsdyk expects to be traded.  The Montreal Canadiens are linked to Bo Horvat.  TSN is reporting that the Vancouver Canucks are considering moving multiple players, including Brock Boeser and Tyler Myers.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Jakub Vrana won’t play tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning and we still don’t know when he will play for the Red Wings.

A look inside Detroit’s six-game losing streak. It’s not one problem. It’s different issues in different games.

Nate Brown writes that the Red Wings are being haunted by ghosts of December’s past.

 Red Wings’ Next Game

The Red Wings (13-11-7) are home against the Tampa Bay Lightning (20-10-1). This will be Lightning assistant coach Jeff Blashill’s first game back in Detroit since being fired by the Red Wings after seven years as head coach.
