The Daily: Horvat trade price too costly for Red Wings; Sharks also want three pieces for Meier

Yzerman unlikely to trade first-round pick

Bo Horvat, Islanders

Were the Detroit Red Wings indeed players in the Bo Horvat sweepstakes? There’s every evidence to suggest that at the very least, the team did make enquiries regarding the Vancouver center.

However, whether or not the Wings were still players as the deal went down on Monday, the price the New York Islanders paid wouldn’t have been one that Detroit GM Steve Yzerman would’ve felt comfortable paying.

The Islanders ended up shipping forward Anthony Beauvillier, top center prospect Aatu Raty and a 2023 first-round draft pick to the Canucks in the trade for Horvat. Horvat will be a UFA at season’s end. That’s a steep price to pay for a potential rental.

One that Yzerman was unlikely to spend. By comparison, putting this deal into Red Wings terms, along with the first-round they might’ve had to package forward Oskar Sundqvist and center prospect Marco Kasper.

Listening to what Yzerman said about his rebuilding blueprint earlier this season, that’s not a move that would be one he’d seek to engineer.

“My intention at this time is to hold on to our draft picks and continue to draft well, or try to draft well, and just be patient with these young guys and let them work their way into becoming NHLers,” Yzerman said.
