The Daily: Red Wings Helping Griffins; Will Bruins Offer Lysell in Kane Deal?

Red Wings Alex Nedeljkovic

The best indication of the Detroit Red Wings’ improved health is the Grand Rapids Griffins’ recent won-loss record.

Every time an injured player returns to Detroit’s lineup, the Griffins received help from a player sent down to make room for the Detroit returner. Alex Nedeljkovic. Jakub Vrana. Elmer Soderblom.  Now Adam Erne. Even Matt Luff and Austin Czarnik. These are all players who were in Detroit’s plans this season and are now contributing to the Griffins’ success.

The Griffins website does a good job of spelling out how the former Red Wings are helping the Griffins “find a groove.” That’s particularly true in the case of Nedeljkovic, Soderblom and Vrana.

Grand Rapids boasts a four-game winning streak and has points in eight of its last nine (6-1-1-1). Since the new year, Grand Rapids has lost in regulation three times in 14 games (8-3-1-2, 0.679). Here are the Red Wings who are hot:

  •  Nedeljkovic is 7-3-2 record with one shutout along with a 2.40 goals against average and a 0.921 save percentage
  • Vrana is on four-game points streak (four goals, two assists) and has scored six goals in his past seven games.
  • The 6-foot-8 Soderblom has four goals and six points in his past four games. Last Saturday, he had the shootout winner against Texas.

Despite recent success, the Griffins still have work to do. They are seven points out of an American Hockey League playoff spot with 29 games remaining. They play two games against the Manitoba Moose this Friday and Saturday in Grand Rapids.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Will Filip Zadina’s fresh start include more goal scoring? The Red Wings could use a finisher.

Coach Derek Lalonde candidly admits the Red Wings are short — very short — on finishers.

Tyler Bertuzzi’s revival comes at an opportune time for the Red Wings. GM Steve Yzerman has a decision to make about what to do with Bertuzzi. Like Dylan Larkin, Bertuzzi can be a UFA this summer.

Red Wings’ Next Game

The Red Wings (21-20-8) play the Calgary Flames (24-17-10) tonight at Little Caesars Arena. The Flames were in town early, and Calgary coach Darryl Sutter was in LCA Tuesday night to watch the Edmonton Oilers down the Red Wings 5-2. The Flames are 3-1-1 in their last five games, including an overtime loss to the Rangers Monday night.
