Bob Boughner is enjoying his first season as a Red Wings assistant coach.

When he crosses paths with Red Wings senior vice president Jimmy Devellano, Detroit assistant coach Bob Boughner always takes time to reminsince about the 1989 NHL entry draft. That was when then Red Wings GM Devellano was selecting Boughner in the second round.

Although he never suited up as a Red Wings player, Boughner is cherishing this, his first season as a Detroit assistant coach.

“It’s very special,” said Boughner, who was joining Detroit after his dismissal as coach of the San Jose Sharks. “This summer, sitting down and trying to figure out my next step, obviously this was a team that was right up there. I’ve got a ton of family and friends over in Windsor on the other side (of the border). It is a special place in my heart.

“I was drafted here in 1989, playing in the organization for a few years and the farm system with Adirondack Red Wings. I see a lot of the guys that are working in the alumni that are hanging around here every day are guys that I played with in the minors, so I’m very familiar with the staff and the people that run the organization.

“It was just an easy step for me and it’s great living here. I go back (to Windsor) on my off days. I get to spend a lot of time there, so that’s nice.”
