The Daily: Dubois-to-Habs Rumors Start; Red Wings Draftee in Game 7

Red Wings prospect Theodor Niederbach

Detroit Red Wings prospect Theodor Niederbach’s hope of returning to the Swedish Hockey League next season now comes down to a Game 7 Sunday in the Hockey Allsvenskan.

If Niederbach’s MoDo team beats Djurgarden, MoDo is promoted to the SHL. If MoDo loses, its remains in the lower level Allsvenskan.

MoDo could have clinched Friday, but lost a 3-2 decision in overtime. Niederbach (drafted 51st in 2020) did score a power play goal for MoDo in that game. He has played well in the playoffs, totaling four goals an eight assists for 12 points in 16 games. He had 18 points in 31 games for MoDo in the regular-season.

Niederbach is 21, and it feels like any hope he has of reinvigorating his ambition to play in the NHL is dependent upon returning to the SHL.

Red Wings’ Offseason

The Red Wings  are preparing for the 2023 NHL draft (June 28-29, Nashville) and the free agent market. According to CapFriendly.com, the Red Wings have about $30.6 million in cap space remaining with 15 NHL regulars under contract. They still have to sign restricted free agent Joe Veleno. But Yzerman does have the money to shop for scoring help, a backup goalie and right-shot defenseman.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

  • The Red Wings will play two regular-season games in Stockholm, Sweden next season.
  • Bob Duff writes that there are reasons to re-sign Pius Suter and other reasons to let him explore the free agent marketplace.
  • If Alex Nedeljkovic or Magnus Hellberg isn’t re-signed, the Red Wings will need another goalie. The goaltender market s rather thin.
  •  GM Steve Yzerman is pleased with the progress goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa is making in Toledo.
