The Daily: Red Wings Chiarot at Center of Odd Habs-Leafs Relationship; Montgomery on Thin Ice in Boston?

Pick acquired for Chiarot could slide to 29th

Ben Chiarot, Red Wings
Montreal got Florida's 2023 first round pick in a trade for current Red Wings D Ben Chiarot.

Imagine Detroit Red Wings fans rooting for the Chicago Blackhawks, or Detroit Lions fans pulling for the Green Bay Packers. Just the notion of such an act is entirely distasteful.

So now you know how supporters of the Montreal Canadiens are feeling at the moment. They find themselves in the untenable position of wishing the best of luck to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it’s all because of Red Wings defenseman Ben Chiarot.

At the 2022 NHL trade deadline, the Habs moved Chiarot to Florida for the Panthers 2023 first-round pick. When the Panthers were trailing the Boston Bruins 3-1 in the opening playoff round, that pick was going to be slotting in at No. 17 overall. However, Florida would rally to beat the Bruins in seven games. Currently, the Panthers are up 3-0 on the Leafs in the second round. They’re one win away from the Eastern Conference final.

Should that ticket be punched, the Florida pick under Montreal ownership slides to at best 29th overall. If that happens, look for the Habs to be moving the pick for other assets.

As for Chiarot, Florida was opting not to sign him at the end of last season. He would ink a free-agent pact with the Red Wings.

Red Wings Offseason

There’s just one Red Wings prospect left with a chance to earn a trip to the Memorial Cup. The Halifax Mooseheads and recent Detroit free-agent signee Alexandre Doucet are playing Patrick Roy and the Quebec Remparts in the QMHJL final. However, Detroit draftees Pasquale Zito and Tnias Mathurin and the North Bay Battalion were dropping Game 7 of the OHL Eastern Conference final to the Peterborough Petes, one-time junior squad of Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman.
