SKA St. Petersburg are hopeful of being able to loan Red Wings draftee Dmitri Buchelnikov to another KHL team to increase his playing time.

The management of SKA St. Petersburg are seeking to find another KHL home for Detroit Red Wings draftee Dmitri Buchelnikov. The hope is that Buchelnikov, 19, will become a KHL regular with that team while on loan from St. Petersburg.

Buchelnikov signed a three-year contract extension with SKA during the past season. However, he was only able to find his way into 10 games for one of the top teams in the KHL. In that brief exposure, Buchelnikov was collecting a goal and an assist. However, he was also expressing no appetite to leave SKA in search of playing time elsewhere in the KHL.

The 52nd overall selection by Detroit in the 2022 NHL entry draft, Buchelnikov was spending most of the 2022-23 season with SKA Neva St. Petersburg of the VHL, Russia’s second division. The 5-foot-9, 150-pound right-shot left-winger counted 15-13-28 numbers in 35 games and a goal and an assist in six playoff games.

Buchelnikov also skated briefly with SKA 1946 St. Petersburg of the MHL, the Russian junior league. Here he was dominant, posting 5-7-12 digits in just four games and 5-2-7 totals through nine playoff games.

  • What does the future hold for goalie Magnus Hellberg with the Detroit organization?

Red Wings Offseason

As the IIHF World Championship is getting underway in Finland and Latvia, Germany and Sweden are squaring off in a marquee matchup, at least from a Detroit viewpoint. Moritz Seider will be leading the Germans on the ice to face off againsr Lucas Raymond, Jonatan Berggren and the Swedes.
