The Daily: Sabres Chasing Hellebuyck?; Oilers-Bruins a Trade Fit

Red Wings - Sabres
The rebuilding Red Wings have to keep up with the rebuilding Sabres to compete in Atlantic Division. The Sabres will be way ahead if they land Connor Hellebuyck

During the season, Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman made the point that his team needed to keep up with the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators because those were the teams the Red Wings will be competing with in the Atlantic Division in the near future.

Those teams are on similar rebuilding timelines.

That’s why the Red Wings have to be concerned that the Athletic is reporting that the Sabres are in pursuit of a trade with the Winnipeg Jets for Connor Hellebuyck. The Sabres already boast Devon Levi who  is considered one of the NHL’s best young goalies

Hellebuyck will be an unrestricted free agent a year from now. That’s why the Jets are considering moving him.

He could be the missing piece for the Sabres.

The Sabres already have one of the NHL’s best offensive teams, plus two elite defensemen in Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. The addition of Hellebuyck would give them one of the top 10 goalies in the game.

Don’t forget that the Sabres only finished one point behind the Florida Panthers in the Atlantic Division standings. Now the Panthers look like they are headed toward the Stanley Cup Final.

Red Wings’ Offseason

Detroit Red Wings player Dominik Kubalik is leading the World Championships with eight goals and 12 points. His closest competitor is three points away.
