The Daily: Treliving Is Toronto GM; No Timeline on Bergeron Decision

Brad Treliving will soon be named the new general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. How long will it take before he becomes inundated by calls from other GMs inquiring about what it would cost to acquire Mitch Marner or William Nylander from the Maple Leafs?

Toronto president Brendan Shanahan reportedly called the team’s Big Four forwards and said it was not his intention to trade any of them. But he has also said the GM will make the final roster decisions.

Because Detroit GM Steve Yzerman is thorough, he will likely make that call to Treliving. Marner was a 99-point scorer and Nylander is a 40-goal scorer this season. Yzerman is looking for offensive help. But the Maple Leafs’ will want Detroit’s No. 9 pick and multiple prospects, such as Simon Edvinsson or Marco Kasper.

Nylander ($6.9 million salary cap hit) can become an unrestricted free agent in a year and Marner ($10.9 million) only has two seasons remaining.

Rising teams such as Detroit, Ottawa and Buffalo would all like to add a proven player like Marner or Nylander, but those teams will be reluctant to trade away multiple young assets to get them.

Of course, Treliving may not want to trade any of those players. Everyone understands that his first priority has to be to sign Auston Matthews to a long-term deal.
