The Daily: Bruins’ First Arena To Be Torn Down; Utah Name Update
Matthews Arena, the original home of the Boston Bruins, will meet the wrecking ball after next season’s Northeastern winter sports schedule is completed.
The building will close 115 years after it opened and became the original home of the Bruins (1924-28) and the Boston Celtics (1946-1955). The arena, opened in 1910, is located on the Northeastern Campus and is considered the world’s oldest athletic arena. The Bruins moved into the Boston Garden in 1928. They opened TD Garden in 1995.
The Northeastern Hockey Blog broke the story, noting that Northeastern has filled a letter of intent to build a new multi-purpose arena.
Four Names in the Hat
Ryan Smith, owner of the Utah NHL franchise, said the team is down to four names being considered for the former Arizona Coyotes.
Appearing on the Pat McAfee show, Smith said Yeti and Mammoth are two of the names, but didn’t divulge the other two. He said fans will need to be patient. They are not there yet.
“Mammoth is up there… I think Yeti is up there…”
Utah’s NHL Hockey Team is one step closer to getting a name… but not that close. We won’t have a name or official logo for the upcoming season so I guess we have to be patient! https://t.co/cp93sWH1er

SKA St. Petersburg officials are loaning Detroit prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov to yet another KHL team. Buchelnikov, 20. cannot crack St. Petersburg’s lineup. He’s heading to Vityaz this season.
Red Wings great Nick Lidstrom expected to see more from Sweden in the semifinals at the World Championships.
Red Wings Offseason
As usual, mock drafts are varied on their projections for what the Red Wings will do with the No. 15. However, Oshawa right wing Beckett Sennecke seems like a good fit. He’s a 6-foot-2 forward coming off a strong OHL playoff performance. After producing 68 points in 63 games in the regular season, Sennecke scored 10 goals and totaled 22 points in 16 playoff games. But keep in mind that even though the Red Wings seem to have more defensemen on their prospect list, it won’t preclude GM Steve Yzerman from taking a defenseman. He believes strongly is taking the best player, regardless of the position because you don’t know what your team will look like when a draft pick is ready.
