The Detroit Red Wings and other NHL teams will have an extra $300,000 in cap space they weren’t counting on.

The NHL announced the cap is rising from $83.5 million to $88 million. The early projections had it rising five percent to $87.7.

With the added increase, the Detroit Red Wings now have $29.4 million in available cap space. If the Red Wings carry 23 players next season, they still have 10 players left to sign. That includes restricted free agents Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond, Albert Johansson, Jonatan Berggren and Joe Veleno. Seider’s and Raymond’s deals will take up the most space.

NHL Productions is doing a documentary on former 101-year-old former Red Wings player Steve Wochy. He scored 19 goals for Detroit in 1944-45.

Detroit minor league goalie John Lethemon, now a free agent, is heading to Finland to play next season.

GM Steve Yzerman may be looking for a seasoned veteran to play with Sebastian Cossa in Grand Rapids next season.

Red Wings Offseason
