The Daily: Habs In Necas Trade Talk; NHL Embracing Florida Plan
Marc Dumont of Montreal Hockey Now writes that the Montreal Canadiens are among the many teams involved in the Martin Necas sweepstakes.
TSN’s Pierre LeBrun says most of the teams in the NHL are interested in Necas, but Carolina wants to narrow it down to five to seven teams with the most serious offers.
It seems unclear exactly what the Hurricanes want in return. There’s been talk of Winnipeg perhaps being in the mix with Nikolaj Ehlers moving in the Necas deal. The Hurricanes are in danger of losing Brady Skjei and/or Brett Pesce to free agency. They could be looking for a proven defensemen without a big cap hit.
“If (the Carolina defensemen are) intent on hitting the free agency market, the Canadiens may have an answer to Carolina’s defensive woes among the seven or eight defensemen who are intent on playing in the NHL next season,” Dumont wrote. “Many of these younger defencemen have very reasonable contracts, which could help Carolina navigate their difficult salary-cap situation.”
