The first round of the NHL entry draft is to take place on Friday in Las Vegas. The Detroit Red Wings will be making their first-round selection with the 15th overall pick. Based on talking to scouts, GMs and other hockey people, as well as studying the mock drafts of top NHL draft experts, Detroit Hockey Now is looking at players who could potentially be Detroit’s selection. Today, we look at Spokane Chiefs center Berkly Catton.

Berkly Catton

Catton is a proven goal scorer whose quickness and intelligence make him a standout. He had 54 goals and 116 points last season, both ranking in the top five in the Western Hockey League, and led the WHL with seven shorthanded goals. His goal production nearly matched his points production (55) for the 2022-23 season. All this despite being the focus of opposing defenses throughout the season. Last summer, he captained Team Canada to the gold medal at the Hinka Gretzky Cup, scoring eight goals in five games.

He’ll mark a couple of milestones this week, having graduated from high school on Tuesday and getting drafted on Friday. He’s one of four Saskatoon, Saskatchewan natives who could be drafted this weekend.
