Patrik Laine, blue jackets

The race is on for the Columbus Blue Jackets to trade Patrik Laine. The Columbus Blue Jackets got the green flag Friday when Laine was cleared to leave the NHL/NHL Players Association Players Assistance Program.

This needed to happen because would-be Laine suitors wanted to talk to Laine before completing any deal.

Aaron Portzline of the Athletic says Laine was being treated for self-proclaimed mental healthy reasons since entering the program in January. Several teams want to acquire the forward.  He has two seasons remaining on a contract paying him $8.7 million per season.

Boasting a big shot with a quick release, Laine, 26, had nine points in 18 games last season. However, he has 204 goals in his NHL career.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Veteran Detroit forward Andrew Copp expects more from himself this season. He will likely center the Red Wings’ third line.

Red Wings promote Aaron Kahn to assistant general manager. He deals with contracts and the salary cap.

Paywall story: Defenseman Brady Cleveland, a Red Wings’ second round draft pick in 2023, expects increased playing time after transferring to Colorado College. Cleveland didn’t play as much as he would have liked last season at Wisconsin, but he still felt as if he learned plenty about himself and his game. If you want to subscribe, click here.
