Former Detroit Red Wings player Mike Modano registered a historic first at a celebrity golf tournament

Mike Modano was 40 and past his NHL expiration date when he suited up for the Detroit Red Wings in 2010-11. But it was still memorable to see one of the greatest American-born players wearing the Winged Wheel.

He grew up in the Livonia/Westland area and learned to play hockey in the Little Caesars program. He was as Michigan as Vernors ginger ale, the auto industry and Mackinac Island Fudge. The Mike Modano Arena in Westland, where he played as a youngster, is 23 miles from Little Caesars Arena.

Only four of his 561 NHL goals came while he played for Detroit, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t one of the most important Michigan natives to ever play for the Red Wings. We’ve picked three forwards, two defenseman and a goalie who were born in the state and played for Detroit. Those are our All-Homegrown Red Wings team.
