The Daily: Clock Ticking on Oilers Decision; Draftee Nets Nice Goal
The clock is ticking for the Edmonton Oilers who have until Tuesday morning to decide how to react to the St. Louis Blues signing their players Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to offer sheets.
Their options are not all that desirable.
The Blues’ offer to defenseman Broberg was $4.58 million average per season on a two-year deal, and forward Holloway received $2.29 million annually for two years. Those are overpayments to dissuade the Oilers from matching. Trying to find cap space for those salaries is proving difficult, especially given that Broberg’s projected salary for a player of his age and accomplishment should be somewhere near $1.8 million based on comparables.
“Myriad NHL teams could simply erase the whiteboard behind the GM’s desk, reassign some dollars, and match on both Broberg and Holloway,” Sportsnet’s Mark Spector wrote. “But with three big contracts in the offing over the next 24 months — players who simply have to be signed — the Oilers are not one of those.”
The Oilers have Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard with expiring contracts after the upcoming season. Then comes Connor McDavid the next year.
New Edmonton GM Stan Bowman reportedly has looked at the possibility of trading defensemen Cody Ceci or Brett Kulak. If the Oilers don’t match, they would receive a second-round pick for Broberg and a third-rounder for Holloway as compensation.
That’s not enough for their value. However, having Broberg at an inflated cap hit hurts them. We will know by Tuesday what they will do.
The Edmonton Oilers have $25.6 Million in cap space for next year as of right now,

Red Wings Offseason
Detroit coach Derek Lalonde turns 52 today. Last season, he guided the Red Wings to an 11-point improvement. They missed the playoffs by a single point. This seems like a pivotal season for Lalonde and his team.
