The Daily: Oilers Have Cap Space to Match; Filppula Will Play
The Edmonton Oilers trade of Cody Ceci to the San Jose Sharks created a belief that the Oilers plan to keep at least one, and perhaps both, players who were signed to offer sheets by the St. Louis Blues.
The Blues signed defenseman Philip Broberg for $4.58 million per season over two seasons. Dylan Holloway received an average of $2.29 million on his two-year Blues’ deal. The Oilers have until tomorrow to decide whether to match. If they don’t match, the Oilers compensation (based on their salary) would be a second-round pick for Broberg and a third rounder for Holloway.
Moving Ceci cleared $3.25 million from Edmonton’s cap space. With Evander Kane facing an injury to start the season, the Oilers can put him on long-term injured reserve. That would clear enough space to match on both players.
If #LetsGoOilers match both offer sheets, a possible compliant opening roster:
-Kane to LTIR
-Savoie up (to include his perf bonuses in LTIR capture)
-Ryan down
-Stecher downIt's $5,124,707 over cap, $293 from optimal LTIR capture to start yr

But it’s certainly not a given they will match both. Both players were overpaid (based on comparables) to discourage the Oilers from matching. The Oilers added forward (Vasily Podkolzin) Sunday in a trade. Perhaps the Oilers will match Broberg and let Holloway go.
Stay tuned.
