The Daily: Michigan Player May Be NHL Trade Bait; Tragic Memory

Cam Fowler, Anaheim Ducks

Hockey Insider Elliotte Friedman believes Anaheim Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler could end up being a central figure in the NHL trade market.

On his 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman said the Ducks and Fowler, who grew up in Farmington, Mich. have had cordial, positive discussions about his future with the team.  Fowler, 32, will be starting his 15th season with Anaheim.

Friedman said no one should be surprised “if sometime this season, Cam Fowler is elsewhere.”

Cue up NHL trade rumors.

“They’ve got a lot of good, young players. Eventually, what you’ve got to start doing is you’ve got to say, ‘Cam, we’ve got to start taking away some of your ice time so that the other players can learn what it’s like to play in the important situations,'” Friedman said. “(Fowler) knows that when they’re good and really ready to contend, it’s going to be their team, and not his team.”

His no-trade clause is an impediment to trading him, but he seems willing to work with the Ducks. The Red Wings have been interested in Fowler in the past, but they have plenty of young defensemen waiting in the wings for an opporunity.

“From what I’ve heard, Fowler has indicated a willingness to talk to more teams than (those on his list) and consider more teams than that,” Friedman added. “I think there will be interest.”

Red Wings Offseason

You know the NHL season is around the corner when injury news is front and center.  Prospect defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka (17th, 2023) won’t play today for Skelleftea in its Champions League game in Straubing, Germany. He is officially listed as day-to-day. He played 2:37 in Skelleftea’s first Champions League game.
