Filip Zadina, Detroit Red Wings

Filip Zadina undoubtedly hopes to find the net in Switzerland with more frequency than he lit the lamp in the NHL.  That hasn’t yet with Zadina boasting one goal in four games with Davos.

But he certainly showed a scorer’s touch on his first goal in the Swiss National League:

Zadina, 24, had a career-high 13 goals last season for a poor San Jose Sharks team. The Davos team has earned three points in its four games this season.

Another ex-Detroit player Austin Czarnik, 31, is playing SC Bern in the Swiss League and he has one assist in his first two games. Czarnik, a Detroit native, had only one point for the Red Wings last season in 34 NHL games.  Czarnik totaled 10 goals and 28 points in 38 games for Grand Rapids in the AHL.

Swiss National League players usually make between $225,000 and $300,000, but important players can make more, and often receive cars to drive, living accomodations and tax breaks.

Dominik Kubalik, a 20-goal scorer for Detroit two seasons ago, owns a goal and two assists for three points for Ambri Piotta in the SNL.

Taro Hirose, who spent five seasons with the Red Wings organization, is off to a quality start for Munich EHC (Red Bull). He has three points in two games.

The Red Wings didn’t re-sign former Michigan State goalie John Lethemon after he played his second season for the Toledo Walleye and Griffins last season. Now playing for Lukko Rauma in the Finnish Elite League, he’s fourth in the league with a 1.93 goals-against average. The Northville native is 1-3 with one shutout.
