The Daily: Ex-Red Wings Player on Celebrini Protection Detail; Habs Trade Talk

Givani Smith, Detroit Red Wings

Givani Smith is having the kind of training camp for the San Jose Sharks that GM Steve Yzerman and Co. used to hope he would have for the Detroit Red Wings.

“It’s the best I’ve seen him play,” new San Jose Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky said over the weekend.

Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey now reported that after Vegas Golden Knights’ Kaeden Korczak took a run at No. 1 overall draft pick Macklin Celebrini, Smith confronted Korczak immediately.

“He’s not even 19 yet and the guy comes across the ice to hit him. It’s gonna happen all year with him, he’s gonna be a target,” Smith said. “If we let them know off the bat, we’re not joking around, the San Jose Sharks, it will go a long way.”

Warsofsky is stressing he wants the Sharks to be a real team, with players standing up for each other.

“Could Smith be a part of that?,” Peng wrote. “It’s a logjam up front for the San Jose Sharks during camp, but the winger appears to be the only potential heavyweight around.”

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Detroit prospect defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka is off to an exceptional start, two goals in his first two games in the Swedish Hockey League. He had another memorable goal. Worth the look.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard wasn’t one of the rookies who put himself on the scoresheet in Wednesday’s 4-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks. He will get more preseason games.

Former Red Wings player Mark Kirton, suffered from ALS, fighting back in his own way, by raising money to find a cure.

Ville Husso made the first statement in the open competition to be one of the Red Wings’ two main goalies. He showed he was healthy, playing 40 minutes, stopping 15 of 17 shots, in a 4-2 road win against the Chicago Blackhawks.  He was particularly impressive in the first period, and early in the second. Sebastian Cossa is not even in the goalie competition, but he looked sharp, stopping all 10 shots he faced. The Red Wings face the Blackhawks again Friday at Little Caesars Arena.

I don’t think Husso made much of a statement. He did look sharp at times but he also let in a weak goal. It was no surprise that his save percentage was below .900 as usual for him. So no, I don’t think he made much of a statement at all. I will give Husso that I think the Wings played better defense in front of Cossa than Husso. Now whether that was just a progression of them getting more comfortable playing to gether or whether they stepped up for Cossa, I don’t know.

Husso needs to go. I hope they do not re-sign him.

Don’t worry. They won’t.

If the Sharks are relying on Givani Smith to protect Celebrini then good luck. 🙄

I can’t recall ever seeing him win a fight in Detroit.

His face was basically a speed bag. 😬

He was a willing participant if that counts for anything.
