The Daily: Why Bertuzzi Plays for ‘Hawks; Detroit Begins with ‘D’

Tyler Bertuzzi

Former Red Wings player Tyler Bertuzzi likely will play on a line with Connor Bedard and Taylor Hall this season. But that’s not why he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks instead of staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

He felt drawn to Chicago, even though they were near the bottom of NHL standings last season. It helped that the Blackhawks offered him a four-year deal at $5.5 million per season. The Blackhawks are his third team since leaving Detroit.

“A young team that’s hungry and looking to try and slowly build something,” Bertuzzi told the Associated Press. “I went through it with Detroit.  Hopefully here I can stick it out and be here for the turnaround. It was an opportunity to play, play with good players.”

The Blackhawks are in Detroit tonight for a game against the Red Wings.

Bertuzzi’s feisty playing style should provide some cover for the dynamic Bedard. As Red Wings fans know, Bertuzzi is strong on puck retrieval and battling along the boards. Bertuzzi played against Detroit Wednesday in Chicago, which probably won’t play tonight.

He says he wants to win. But he signs with a team that can’t. It’s all about money. The fans care more about winning than these players. They’re all mercenaries.

Somewhat true. I have a feeling its also a chance to play a lot. He was on the third or fourth line with Leafs some, he will get first line minutes with the Hawks and will help them. And yes, there were the only team that offered him more than one year.

Mike Babcock

LOL Bert.

He signed with Chicago because they offered him the most term.
