Red Wings vs Penguins

The Ilitch family, owners of the Detroit Red Wings, also own the playoff bound Detroit Tigers. And they are taking a page out of the MLB spring training and bringing it into the NHL preseason.

Saturday’s NHL preseason game at Little Caesars Arena between the Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins was postponed. Travel issues encountered by the Penguins in their efforts to get to Detroit were the cause for the postponement.

Originally, amidst hope that the Penguins might be able to get to the Motor City, the start time of the game was delayed until 8:30 p.m. It was originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. puck drop.

The game has since been rescheduled for Monday, with a 7 p.m. start time. However, the Red Wings will also be playing that night in Buffalo against the Sabres in NHL preseason action. So they will be playing a split squad. Part of the team will remain in Detroit to play the Penguins. Another group will be heading to Buffalo to tangle with the Sabres.

Split squad games have been commonplace for decades during baseball spring training. Now they’ve become part of the NHL preseason landscape.

Finding another way to fit this game in would’ve proven to be a tall order. The Red Wings are off Sunday. They have preseason games slated for Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, the Penguins play Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Detroit and the Penguins are playing eaach other on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
