Detroit Red Wings Norwegian rookie Michael Brandsegg-Nygard played golf with teammates in Traverse City during the opening days of training. He came away believing the European and North American handicap system is different. Or, some of the boys were fibbing about their handicaps.

“I’m a 17 handicapper,” Brandsegg-Nygard said. “…and some of the guys said they have like a 9 handicap and I don’t believe that.”

One player he does believe is fellow rookie Nate Danielson. “Nate is pretty good,” he said. “I think he has a 4 handicap and I believe that.”

Everyone believes in Danielson’s athletic talent. It’s his poise and understated confidence. It’s his ability to sort out what’s happening in games when chaos reigns. In every game he plays, he makes a play or three that remind you that he boasts the blend of skill and mental sharpness that can make him an impact performer.
