BUFFALO —There were a couple of milestones of sorts in Monday’s Red Wings loss at Buffalo.

Top draft choice Michael Brandsegg-Nygard scored his first goal, giving the Red Wings a 1-0 lead, while defenseman William Lagesson, who has never scored in a regular-season NHL game, gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead in the third period.

But the Buffalo Sabres tied it on Graham Slaggert’s second goal of the game later in the period, and won it with a goal by highly regarded prospect Konsta Helenius with 13 seconds left in overtime to take a 4-3 win.

Neither Brandsegg-Nygard nor Lagesson are likely to start the season in Detroit, but Elmer Soderblom could. He tied the game with a goal early in the third period.

One of the subplots going into the game was in net, where Alex Lyon and Jack Campbell saw action. Both faced 22 shots and allowed two goals. Lyon played the first two periods, while Campbell played the third period and the overtime.

Lyon, who was the Red Wings starter at the end of last  season, is looking to make his case to stick in Detroit.

Campbell is trying to make a comeback after a disastrous stint in Edmonton. He will likely end up in Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids coach Dan Watson coached the team, made up mostly of guys he’ll be coaching this winter.

The Sabres had mostly minor leaguers on the ice as well, with the NHL players in Europe for the Global Series.

The rare split squad games came about after Pittsburgh encountered mechanical troubles with the team plane on Saturday.

That scheduled game was played in Detroit on Monday.  The Red Wings and Penguins play in Pittsburgh tonight.
