The Pittsburgh Penguins will be relying primarily on Tristan Jarry in goal for the foreseeable future. Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said Wednesday that former Red Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic is out week-to-week with a lower body injury.

He suffered that injury playing against the Red Wings Monday at Little Caesars Arena. Nedeljkovic left the game at 13:04 of the first period.  Replays showed him holding his midsection after making a couple of saves.  Joel Blomqvist replaced him.

Nedeljkovic played well for the Penguins, particularly down the stretch, last season. He is very much in their plans for this season

Shelly Anderson of PHN writes about whether Blomqvist is ready to step up. At 22, Blomqvist is the same age as Detroit goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa.

“How (Blomqvist) reacted to his first game has been impressive,” Sullivan said. “As a young player when it doesn’t go the way you want, sometimes that could affect your overall confidence, and in turn affect your future performance. And that hasn’t been the case. He put it behind him, went back to work. … He went back in the net and did a terrific job. I think that says a lot about his maturity. I think that says a lot about his resilience.”

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

The Red Wings released veteran Alex Chiasson from his PTO.  The training camp roster is still at 55, including eight goalies.

Paywall story: Coach Derek Lalonde likes 26-year-old prospect Hunter Johannes‘ “high compete motor.” Johannes has an AHL contract for this season.  If you still need to subscribe, you can buy a yearly or monthly subscription here.

Michigan native Austin Watson hopes the Red Wings will give him the opportunity to put some punch in their lineup.
