Detroit Red Wings
Daily: Will Brandsegg-Nygard Play in GR or SHL?; Watson Fate

The Detroit Red Wings must submit their final roster by 5 p.m. Monday and there are some decisions that need to made. The Red Wings have to decide for sure whether they will keep three goalies. GM Steve Yzerman has to decide whether any of the rookies has earned a spot on the roster. Can they find room for veteran tough guy Austin Watson? They also need to discuss the future of Michael Brandsegg-Nygard.
Also flying under the radar is a decision about where Brandsegg-Nygard will play this season.
Brandsegg-Nygard has said he expects to be playing for Skelleftea (along with Red Wings prospect Axel Sandin Pellikka). Yzerman clearly trusts SHL to develop players. But Brandsegg-Nygard is a physically developed player, and his game might be better fit for the AHL. That certainly has to be discussed.
Red Wings In Case You Missed It
The Red Wings have needed some team toughness, and PTO Austin Watson has helped them find it. But will he make the Detroit team? There’s really no room on the roster, unless GM Steve Yzerman makes some moves. They could offer him a one-way deal, but start him in Grand Rapids until they have injuries.
Andrew Copp‘s two-point game can’t prevent Detroit from falling to the Toronto Maple Leafs in preseason finale.
Goalie Jack Campbell is in the NHL/NHL Players Association Player Assistance Program. He was supposed to play with the Grand Rapids Griffins this season.
Red Wings Extra
Marco Kasper made a case to suggest he’s ready to make the jump to the NHL. The Red Wings open the 2024-25 season Thursday with a home game against Pittsburgh. Kasper put up two goals and three points in four games. Kasper totaled 11 shots on goal. He averaged 14:27 minutes per game. To put Kasper on the team, GM Steve Yzerman will have trim someone who is expected to make the team. Could he make one last trade? Or, will he send Justin Holl to the AHL?
