The Grand Rapids Griffins, holding their training camp this week, are bringing in goalie Malc0lm Subban on a tryout contract.

Subban, 30, was a first round pick (24th) of the Boston Bruins in 2012 and has played for the Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Vegas Golden Knights, Buffalo Sabres and Columbus Blue Jackets. He has played 87 NHL games. Subban is the brother of former NHL defenseman and current ESPN analyst P.K. Subban.

Sebastian Cossa, 20, will be the Griffins’ No. 1 goalie this season. The original plan was for former NHL Jack Campbell to be his partner and mentor. But Campbell is currently in the NHL/NHL Players Association Player Assistance Program. It’s unknown how long he will be out of the lineup.

Red Wings prospect Carter Gylander, who hasn’t yet played a pro game, is also in the mix. The Red Wings signed Gylander (191st, 2019)last spring after a standout college career at Colgate. Earlier this week, the Griffins sent Jan Bednar to the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL.

Subban played 35 AHL games last season between Springfield and Cleveland, owning a combined 11-17-4 record with a 3.12 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage.  His AHL career mark is a 89-78-29 record with a 2.65 GAA and a .911 save percentage in 206 games. The 30-year-old has also spent nine campaigns in the NHL, producing a 36-34-9 mark with a 3.10 GAA and  a .898 save percentage in 87 appearances.
The Griffins will begin practices in Grand Rapids today at 2:30 p.m. at Griff’s IceHouse at Belknap Park in preparation for Friday’s season opener against the Milwaukee Admirals (7 p.m. at Van Andel Arena).
