James Reimer, Red Wings

Former Detroit Red Wings goalie James Reimer thought he had landed another NHL backup job when he signed with the Buffalo Sabres this summer.

But it didn’t work out that way.

The Sabres waived Reimer Sunday as they finalized their roster by today’s 5 p.m. deadline. Reimer will still earn his $1 million contract if he reports to the Sabres’ Rochester farm team in the American Hockey League.

In other news, the Carolina Hurricanes released former Red Wings forward Sam Gagner, 35,  from his PTO. It’s unknown whether Gagner will retire or pursue trying to catch on with another team. He played for the Edmonton Oilers last season. He played for Detroit for three seasons (2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22).

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Ville Husso posts impressive numbers in coach Derek Lalonde’s open goalie competition. Husso certainly showed he is healthy again.

Detroit GM Steve Yzerman placed defenseman Justin Holl on waivers Sunday for the purpose of sending him to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Bob Duff writes that the Red Wings need a strong start in October or they could find themselves chasing a playoff spot all season like they did last season. Their first five games features the Penguins, the New York Rangers twice and the Nashville Predators twice.
