Michale Brandsegg-Nygard, Red Wings

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is jetting back to Sweden. However, he’s not in any rush to get back into the lineup of SHL champions Skelleftea

The Detroit Red Wings first pick of the 2024 NHL entry draft, Brandsegg-Nygard was given reassignment to Skelleftea after playing the entire NHL preseason with the Red Wings. According to reports, there was a disagreement between the club and the player as to where Brandsegg-Nygard would be playing his hockey this season.

The report was suggesting that the Red Wings brass was wanting the player they chose 15th overall to be plying his trade in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins. However, Brandsegg-Nygard’s preference was to return to Europe and skate with Skelleftea, the reigning SHL champions.

Last season, Brandsegg-Nygard was suiting up for Mora IK in the Allsvenskan, the Swedish second division.

Brandsegg-Nygard Taking His Time To Get Back In Action

Now that the dust has settled and he’s heading back to Sweden, there doesn’t appear to be any rush in Brandsegg-Nygard’s agenda to get back into action. The big Norwegian winger was in the lineup Saturday at Toronto for Detroit’s NHL preseason finale against the Maple Leafs.

His next game action will be coming exactly a week following that game.

“He is ready to play with Skelleftea this season,” Brandsegg-Nygard’s agent Andreas Johansson told Swedish website Aftonbladet. “There will be no match on Thursday, we are aiming for Saturday.”

Skelleftea is playing Rogle on Thursday. They are in action against Timra on Saturday.

Johansson indicated that he’s been getting nothing but positive reports of the progress of his client during Red Wings camp.

“He had a great camp and they were super happy with him,” Johansson said. “Several good games against NHL opposition.”

Skelleftea currently is sitting second in the SHL standings. The club’s roster also includes defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka. Detroit’s 17th overall selection in the 2023 NHL entry draft, Sandin Pellikka is showing 2-3-5 totals through seven games this season. He is playing in the second defense pairing for Skelleftea.
