The Daily: Lalonde Will Use All Three Goalies; Pens’ ‘Balloon Pops’

Alex Lyon, Red Wings

Bob Duff’s story points out that coach Derek Lalonde awarded Ville Husso the opening game starter’s role because he clearly won the “blank slate” goaltending competition against Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot.

A 43-save game against Pittsburgh and a 30-save game against Toronto put Husso over the top.

But the bigger story here is that the Red Wings feel like they have stronger goaltending than they had last season. Lyon has more experience in big games — picked up last season when he won the starter’s job mid-season. Plus, they added Talbot who played a significant role in pushing the Los Angeles Kings into the playoffs last season.

“Confident in all three goalies,” Lalonde said. “Was comfortable in starting in any of those three in the (opener). I think you may even see all three sometimes early in the season. That’s what we’re going with and we’re excited about it.”

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

Bob Duff looks at whether coach Derek Lalonde’s Red Wings came make the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard won’t play until Saturday in the SHL.

The Red Wings signed 238-pound bruiser Austin Watson, but he won’t play tonight.
