Red Wings Place Husso on Waivers
Club needs cap space to call up forward

What a four days it’s been for Detroit Red Wings goalie Ville Husso. He’s gone from No. 1 goalie to being placed on NHL waivers in that span.
Thursday morning, he was the opening-night starter for the club against the Pittsburgh Penguins. That would last until the 5:28 mark of the second period. Husso was given the hook at that point after allowing four goals on 14 shots.

Suddenly, the Finnish netminder was persona non grata. Cam Talbot got the start and shutout the Nashville Predators 3-0 on Saturday. Alex Lyon was on the bench as backup goalie.
Today, Husso is no longer on the Red Wings roster. By placing him on waivers Sunday, he’ll either be claimed by another NHL team, or given assignment to the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins if there’s no club interested. Seeing as Husso is earning $4.75 million this season, the latter outcome appears likely.
Red Wings In Need Of Forward
Winger Christian Fischer was suffering an upper-body injury in Saturday’s game. He’s out day to day, as is defenseman Jeff Petry, also with an upper-body injury.
Since neither is ailing enough to go on IR, the Red Wings were left in the uneviable position of needing cap space to be able to call up another for Monday’s road game against the New York Rangers.
Husso typically is the exact goalie you claim in these scenarios but man — he has been ruthlessly bad in Detroit.

“We probably have to do some moving around,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said of the club’s 23-player roster. “Potentially send someone through waivers to get a body available.”
Husso was the most logical candidate to go on waivers.
Now that we know it’s Husso who is going, the next question is who’s arriving?
Don’t get your hopes up that it will be 202o first-round draft pick Marco Kasper. Since it’s likely only to be a short-term need, veteran pros such as Austin Watson or Sheldon Dries are probably the more likely fit.
“Being a short term call up, might be a more veteran guy,” Lalonde admitted.
