The Daily: Can Red Wings Avoid Poor Start? Buchelnikov Flies

The Detroit Red Wings knew going into the season that their first five games would present a significant challenge. Those five games included the Pittsburgh Penguins on opening night, followed by the Nashville Predators, home-and-home against the New York Rangers and then another game against the Nashville Predators.
The Rangers (Igor Shesterkin) and Predators (Juuse Saros) boast two of the most dominating NHL goalies.
As determined as they were to prevent a poor start, they now sit 1-2 after losing 4-1 to New York at Madison Square Garden. It’s early to be sure, but losing Thursday at home would set a negative tone for a squad that needs to qualify for the playoffs after an eight-year absence.
Thursday’s game seems important for a team that wants to avoid a poor start.
