The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Marco Kasper from their Grand Rapids farm team under what are being called “emergency conditions.”

According to the CBA, NHL teams can use an emergency recall if at any point they fall below either 18 healthy, game-available skaters or two healthy, game-available goaltenders on their active roster and they have less than the league minimum salary plus $100,000 in available cap space.

The Red Wings presumably will explain the situation after practice today.

Kasper, 20, played well enough in the preseason to be considered to make the Red Wings roster. But the Red Wings had a set roster, and decided it was better for his development if he was playing top line minutes for Grand Rapids, instead of fighting for playing time in Detroit.

Picked eighth overall in 2022, Kasper is a high energy center who is hard to play against. He has a goal and an assist in two games this season. He has his first professional fight.

Kasper made his NHL debut as an 18-year-old on April 2, 2023 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, finishing with one shot and three hits in 14:59 of ice time. He suffered an injury in the game, but finished it. He didn’t play the rest of the season.Â
