This spectacular save was unfolding late in the second period of Detroit’s 5-2 victory at Nashville on Saturday. Let’s set the scene:
The Red Wings were leading 2-1. However, Nashville was enjoying a 5-on-3 power-play advantage.
Stamkos, as is his wont, was set up on the flank at the left faceoff dot, awaiting to be set up to unleash his deadly one timer. And the oppportunity was knocking for him almost immediately.
Filip Forsberg slid a pass across, teeing up a wide-open Stamkos, who put all of his fury into his shot. Coming cross crease, Lyon stretched out his body as far as he could and get enough of the puck with the upper shaft of his stick that it deflected the puck away.
The force of the shot knocked the stick right out of Lyons’ right hand.
Red Wings Lyon The Knob King
“I didn’t really see anything honestly,” Lyon told Bally Sports. “It hit my knob, but I am the knob king.
“I make a lot of knob saves in practice, so I’m taking credit for it.”

Lyon would make 36 saves in Detroit’s 5-2 win. Meanwhile, Nashville fell to 0-5.
Stamkos, a seven-time 40-goal scorer who would net a career-high 60 tallies in 2011-12, is still looking for his first goal of the season. Pundits were considering him the catch of the summer UFA signings when the long time Tampa Bay Lightning captain and two-time Stanley Cup winner was joining the Predators.
Nashville would sign Stamkos to a four-year, $32-million contract. By contrast, Lyon is earning $900,00 this season to tend goal for the Red Wings.
