The Grand Rapids Griffins are in the midst of the quality start that their parent club Detroit Red Wings couldn’t quite pull off.

The Griffins recorded two wins against the Manitoba Moose this weekend — by 1-0 and 2-1 verdicts — to give them a 3-1 record, including a 3-0 launch at home. Grand Rapids has posted two shutouts (one each by Sebastian Cossa and Ville Husso, plus Saturday’s 2-1 win over the Moose. He made 29 saves.

“Obviously,” coach Dan Watson said. “We want to make this a hard place to play.”

The Griffins are executing the blend of defense and goaltending the Red Wings were stressing in their training camp.  Defensemen William Wallinder and Shai Buium, forwards Amadeus Lombardi and Carter Mazur, goalie Cossa and other top Detroit prospects seem to be buying into the defense-first emphasis.

“Love the compete level,” Watson said, “the battle level here.”

He adds: “Smart team in the room…guys who care.”

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

When Marco Kasper was called up by the Red Wings, an opportunity opened up for Amadeus Lombardi. He took advantage with a two-goal game for the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Because the Red Wings are 2-0 against the Nashville Predators, their early season struggles have been less disastrous.

Alex Lyon made a must-see save against Steven Stamkos in the 5-2 win against the Predators. The Stamkos shot hit the shaft of his stick.
