One of the more curious prospects in the Detroit Red Wings system is center Amadeus Lombardi. On the one hand, figuring out where he might fit into the team’s future plans is not at all clear. Then again, the shifty pivot keeps on doing things that are showing that you can’t be completely discounting him from the picture.

The summoning of Marco Kasper to Detroit on Friday to be playing  for the Red Wings was meaning that all of the centers on the Grand Rapids Griffins roster were going to be expected to be stepping up. The team would be asking them to fill greater roles. And in Saturday’s 2-1 AHL home-ice win over the Manitoba Moose, it was Lombardi filling the offensive void.

He would score both goals for Grand Rapids. Lombardi was scoring his first goal in tight on the edge of the goal crease after taking a backhand pass from Dominic Shine. He was notching his second tally on a breakaway as Lombardi got in behind the Manitoba defense.

Red Wings director of player development Dan Cleary likes what he’s seeing from the second-year pro.

“He got a taste of the first year and he’s gotten stronger,” Cleary said. “He’s a little bulked up.

“He certainly wants to be a professional hockey player. He’s a driven kid.”

Griffins Cossa Keeps On Rolling

Back between the pipes after giving the net to Ville Husso on Friday, Sebastian Cossa made 29 saves for the win. He’s showing a a 1.67 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage through three outings.

This was the first goal Cossa has surrendered on home ice this season, ending a personal shutout streak for him of 103 minutes and 31 seconds. The Griffins’ home shutout streak was also coming to an end at 163:52.

The Griffins remain in the top five of the AHL for goals against. They are allowing 1.25 goals per game.
